As I was awake and had a 7 hour drive ahead of me I left Lake Tekapo @ 2.30am.
I’m sure I passed many magnificent snow covered mountains and pristine lakes in the dark, but I did make good time.
Around dawn I was in need of a powernap near Kingston at the head of the Frankton arm of Lake Wakitipu near Queenstown, so I pulled into a little picnic area beside the lake. The water was so clear you could see the pebbles on the bottom, so the camera came out.
Two hours later the journey through even more snow covered mountains resumed.
Te Anau was reached by 11am., and the Tourist Information Office delivered the news to upset my applecart.
The nasty weather earlier in the week, that had covered all the mountains with snow for me, had caused an avalanche on the road to Milford Sound where I had planned to spend the next 2 nights.
At this stage (9pm Thursday) the road is not expected to open before Saturday afternoon at the earliest.
My plans are still under revision pending the weather forecasts.
So all I could do for the rest of the day was go and try to take a couple of photos without snow covered mountains in them!
Well I did try.
enjoy te anau
