Day 3 Lake Tekapo

The day didn’t start too well.

Up early to get a dawn shot of the Church of the Good Shepherd.
It had been snowing overnight.

The freezing horizontal winds off the lake blew the tripod over and the camera to landed on a rock, lens first.
Outcome: Tripod irreparably broken, polarizing filter cracked, the Good Shepherd probably offended by the expletives.
Must have been why it snowed horizontally while I walked back to the hostel.

But every disaster has its’ upside.

Lake Tekapo, or rather its surrounding hills, looks spectacular after a dusting of snow. Even without a tripod or polarizing filter.

Yesterdays clouds lifted around nine and after more obligatory shots of the Church I headed down the eastern side of the Lake to the northern end.

Like the Isle of Skye, it was Mother Nature showing off in the sunshine with each bend revealing more snow covered mountains behind snow covered hills. There is no way that any photos could convey the 3D landscape, even with a polarizing filter.

The 25km drive to the head of the lake took 2 hours including photo stops. The drive back took 15 minutes as much of the lower snow had melted in the morning sun.

The afternoon was spent at Mt John where the University of Canterbury has an Observatory.
Again the photos can’t do justice to the 360 degree views.
